Purpose of Role:
The Learning Support Assistant (LSA) plays a vital role in assisting students’ learning and development within an educational setting. They provide support to students with a variety of needs to ensure they can fully participate in classroom activities and reach their potential.

Key Accountabilities:

Support for Students:

  • Assist in the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and support strategies for students with diverse learning needs.
  • Provide one-on-one or small group support to students during lessons or designated learning activities.
  • Encourage student engagement and participation in learning tasks, adapting support strategies as needed.
  • Foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment where all students feel valued and included.

Assistance to Teachers:

  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to develop and adapt learning materials and activities to meet the needs of individual students.
  • Assist in the implementation of behavior management strategies and interventions as directed by the teacher.
  • Provide feedback to teachers on student progress and behavior, contributing to student assessment and evaluation processes.

Administrative Support:

  • Assist with administrative tasks such as organizing and maintaining classroom resources, preparing learning materials, and recording student progress.
  • Support teachers in the preparation and delivery of lessons, including setting up equipment and materials as required.

Personal Care and Support:

  • Provide personal care and support to students with physical disabilities or medical needs, ensuring their health and safety in the school environment.
  • Assist students with mobility, toileting, feeding, and other personal care tasks as necessary, following individual care plans and school policies.

Communication and Collaboration:

  • Maintain open and effective communication with teachers, parents, and other relevant stakeholders regarding student progress, needs, and concerns.
  • Collaborate with other LSAs, school staff, and external professionals (e.g., therapists, social workers) to provide comprehensive support to students.

Professional Development:

  • Engage in professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills relevant to supporting students’ learning and development.
  • Stay informed about best practices in special education and inclusion, incorporating new strategies and approaches into daily practice.

Personal Attributes Required: Qualifications:

  • Relevant qualifications in education, special education, or related field (e.g., Teaching Assistant qualification) desirable.

Experience:

  • Experience working with students in an educational or similar setting, particularly those with diverse learning needs, is preferred.
  • Experience providing personal care and support to individuals with disabilities or medical needs desirable.

Skills, Ability, Knowledge:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, colleagues, and parents.
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine commitment to supporting the learning and well-being of all students.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, collaborating with colleagues to meet the needs of students.
  • Basic understanding of educational principles and practices, including behavior management strategies and learning support techniques.
