Purpose of Role:
Provide specialized knowledge and support to pupils with complex health and physical needs, implementing agreed health interventions including administering medication as per NHS Care Plans and Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). Collaborate with other Education and Healthcare supervisors, Deputy Director of Care and Wellbeing, and NHS professionals. The post holder will be a Moving and Handling Key Trainer.
Key Accountabilities:
Prime Objectives of the Post:
- Lead practitioner in implementing agreed health interventions and administering medication according to NHS Care Plans and EHCPs.
- Provide specialist support to pupils with complex health and physical needs, aligning with school policies.
- Collaborate with supervisors and NHS professionals to meet pupil health/medical needs and advise on best practices.
- Ensure effective assessment and management of healthcare risks in the school setting, reporting incidents promptly.
- Manage and prepare necessary resources.
Reporting, Supervision, and Accountabilities:
- Work under the guidance of teaching/senior staff and the supervision of your line manager.
- Accountable for compliance with all school policies and procedures within the scope of the role, including raising safeguarding concerns.
- Training and competency for delivering health interventions overseen and supervised by NHS professionals.
Supervisory/Managerial Responsibilities:
- Support, advise, and provide general supervision of staff carrying out health interventions and therapy activities for pupils.
- Supervise students on work experience, trainees, and voluntary helpers.
- Raise concerns about colleagues’ proficiency in health interventions for appropriate support and additional training.
Range of Decision Making:
- Make decisions within established working practices and procedures regarding pupil health, mobility, hygiene, behavior, and the use of materials and equipment.
Assets, Materials, etc.:
- Maintain confidentiality of school-related information.
- Lead the training of practitioners school-wide on moving and handling plans.
- Assess and review practitioner competency.
- Ensure proper care of equipment and materials related to healthcare and therapy provision within the school.
- Supervise the provision, use, and storage of equipment and materials.
Range of Duties – Support for Pupils:
- Assist with implementing individual pupils’ EHCPs, Behavior Plans, and NHS Care Plans.
- Deliver health interventions when trained and competent.
- Coordinate emergency management in line with school protocols.
- Support pupil entry/exit from school and safe transport routines.
- Check and maintain parental consents for medical needs or medication.
- Liaise with parents, carers, and partner agencies regarding pupil healthcare needs.
Personal Attributes Required: Qualifications:
- NVQ3 for Health and Social Care or Teaching Assistant, GCSE English and Mathematics (Grade C), ICT qualifications, Moving and Handling Key Trainer (Desirable).
Experience:
- Recent experience in a school or similar organization with children, experience working with children and young people with special educational needs, including complex health and physical needs, moving and handling experience, experience in a health or social care environment (Desirable).
Skills, Ability, Knowledge:
- Evidence of personal development, safeguarding children training, health and safety training, Child Protection training, Team Teach trained, knowledge of complex health and physical needs, understanding of child development and learning, ability to undertake risk assessments, ability to maintain up-to-date records (Desirable).
Personal Qualities:
- Ability to relate well to pupils and adults, ability to share expertise and work as part of a team, constantly improve own practice, remain calm under pressure, good interpersonal skills, flexibility, mental resilience, approachable, and courteous (Desirable).
